The project of “innovation and application of key technologies of radio and multimedia transmission and terminal system” of the Ningbo University was granted the second national prize for progress in science and technology (2009) at the National Science and Technology Awarding Conference held on January 11 in Beijing. This was the second time that Ningbo University had won the National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology as the first project undertaking entity. This was also the fifth time in a row that the Ningbo City had got this honor.
The research project headed by Prof. He Jiaming is about the telecom technology applicable to terminal equipment of mobile multimedia transmission and mobile phones. The work team developed a RFPA optimizing technology and the predistortion technology, which can also reduce power consumption. They have found means of rapid realization and the operand is drastically reduced, which secures high-accuracy synchronization. The researchers worked together with AUX and Bird and developed a platform technology for terminal integrated circulation. They developed core technologies such as cell phone operating system, media player, and input method. Some of the technologies are already in use in our daily life, such as surfing the internet on the cell phones, receiving multimedia messages, downloading ringbells, and audio and video programs, etc.
In an interview, Prof. He Jiaming said telecommunication is a huge and complex system with complex application environment. Tall buildings and rapid movements of vehicles will exert great impact on the transmission of information. There are various standards of telecommunications in the world. Therefore, it is important that the signal transmission and receiving should be compatible to each other. When the mobile telecom technology gives way to multimedia communication, we need broader bandwidth and higher-standard transmission and receiving. This was the rational they undertook this research.
It is learned that this project has obtained 25 patents of invention and 16 items of software registration rights, 12 items of software product registration rights. These technologies have broken through the foreign monopoly and enabled the domestication of the related telecom products, which shortens the development period of product of companies and reduces the development costs.
It is been seven years since the project was initiated. During this period of time some technical achievements have already been used by telecom operators and cell phone producers in China. So far over 50 telecom companies have utilized these achievements. China Mobile and China Unicom have installed the technological products in their base stations. Ningbo Aux Cell Phone, for example, have used nine patents generated by this project and have yielded a sales income of 1.5 billion yuan.
Since 2005, Ningbo has got 11 National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology (being the first undertaking entity for six of them).
