Last Friday, Ms. Gan Mingzhu, a 60-year-old, donated her corneas, which were later implanted into two patients with eye afflictions. Another dying wish she set is to be buried at sea. In a country where cornea donations and sea burials are uncommon, Gan’s noble acts have moved many people.

At 3:30 p.m. on April 27th, Dr. Lu Bin in the Ningbo Eye Hospital received a phone call from Gan’s husband. In grief, he told the doctor that his wife had just died of illness, and he asked doctors to help him to fulfill his wife’s last wish as a cornea donor. Dr. Lu Bin soon rushed to hospital and organized doctors to collect the corneas.

Ms. Gan Mingzhu, the cornea donor, was 60-year-old, and lived in Haishu District. In the eyes of her neighbours and friends, she always kept a low profile. However, her two dying wishes surprised them. Her family supported her decision and has completed her first wish. Now they are submitting applications for a sea burial for Ms. Gan.

Ms. Gan’s first wish have benefited two patients with eye afflictions. After collecting the corneas, two experienced surgeons in Ningbo Eye Hospital performed corneal transplants for 49-year-old Mr. Li and 57-year-old Mr. Lai, helping them to restore eyesight.

April 2 marks the fifth annual World Autism Awareness Day. A volunteer activity to publicize and call for more love and understanding for autism group was launched in Tianyi Square yesterday. The program was sponsored by Ningbo Daily, Volunteer Branch of Ningbo Charity Federation(NBCF) and a parents volunteer organization.
 
During the activity, more than 60 volunteers distributed brochures to the public, handed out blue ribbons which symbolize autism awareness, and collected the public signatures. Their action aims to raise public attention and help to the special group.

Autism, different from schizophrenia or depression, is generally diagnosed at around the age of 3. It is a condition which can affect language development and the ability to relate to others.

Although the cause of autism remains a mystery, it is proved to have nothing to do with the children’s raring methods. The rehabilitation of autism largely depends on early intervention, supplemented by drug therapy. At present, there are no effective drugs or treatment to autism. Early diagnosis and intervention is essential, especially to children aged 0 to 6-year-old.

The recent reports of sudden death at home of the elderly living alone have aroused great concern among citizens. On April 6, the Home Care Volunteer Base titled “filial piety supermarket” was jointly established by Jiangbei District Youth League and District Bureau of Civil Affairs. In the meanwhile, the “filial piety” volunteer campaign, a specialized service project for the elderly living alone, was launched with the help from related colleges and universities.

The ever-increasing number of the elderly living alone has caused such problems as the shortage of beds in nursing homes and the expansion of aging group, which poses great challenges to the existing pension system and the social stability. At present, there are 45,000 senior citizens at the age of 60 or older, accounting for 18.8% of the registered citizens. The caring issue has become serious as 55% of the elderly are empty nesters. To address this issue, by the opportunity of participating in social management, Jiangbei District Youth League adopted the innovative idea of cooperation with Ningbo College of Health Sciences by recruiting college volunteers to provide services for the elderly, such as regular blood pressure and glucose surveillance, massages and healthy diet instructions.     

“We have set up eight service groups to provide door-to-door service at least once a week. Our service targets are mainly those retired elderly citizens (over 60 years old) living alone at home.” said a related official from Jiangbei District Youth League. Each service group is made of eight to ten members, including three students majoring in nursing, rehabilitation and diet respectively. Each group will provide personalized services and establish health files for two to three empty nesters.

It is learned that so far eight communities in the district have been chosen as pilot areas of the service base. About 100 volunteers have entered the communities to carry out regular services for the empty nesters in those communities.

Today marks the seventh World Kidney Day, the theme of which this year is “Donate– Kidneys for Life –Receive”. Public support for organ donation is vital so that more patients with kidney failures can have the opportunity to receive kidney transplants and more lives can be saved.

According to Bao Beiyan, director of Nephrology Division in No.2 Yinzhou Hospital, chronic kidney disease is proved highly prevalent in China, with one patient out of ten people. A large number of patients with chronic kidney disease worsen into uremia. There are more than two million uremic patients in China now, and chronic kidney failure has become one of the leading causes for death. In Ningbo, the number of patients with chronic kidney disease is on the rise. Statistics show that in 2011 Nephrology division in No.2 Yinzhou Hospital accepted 21,829 outpatients, an increase of 18% over 2010.

Although hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are able to renew the lives of patients, they suffer great pains from long-term dialysis. Usually, a patient needs to receive 4-5 hour hemodialysis two or three times a week, which is both time-consuming and costly for their families. There are still a lot of inconvenience although some patients are able to conduct self-operation at home under professional guidance.

Kidney transplant is proved the most successful one among all organ transplants. A uremic patient can be cured after transplantation and lead a normal family life again. Yao Xuping, head of No.2 Yinzhou Hospital, said kidney transplant is a relatively mature technology. They have carried out 1020 kidney operations since the first kidney transplant in 1992, the success rate being 99%.

However, due to the severe shortage of human organs in China, every year less than one percent of uremic patients are fortunate enough to receive kidney transplants. Since the implementation of the Human Organ Transplantation Regulation in 2007, organ donation becomes the only source of organ transplants in China.

In December 2011, Ningbo became the pilot city of the human organ donation. A year later, Sun Yonghai from Northeast China became the first donor by donating his liver, two kidneys, and cornea, bringing new life to five people. His noble act has inspired more citizens to join the voluntary organ donation. According to the Ningbo Red Cross, the number of organ donators has risen from 32 in December 2011 to the current 169, with three become actual organ donors. However, with hundreds of thousands of uremic patients who are waiting for kidney transplants, organ donators are still in desperate need.

Ningbo Charity Federation recently started the election of Ningbo Top 10 Charity Stars” and “Ningbo Top 10 Charity Enterprises”. In May, the federation will host an activity called the One-day Charity Donation and will commend the stars to be elected.

The candidates for the stars will be those individuals and enterprises that made outstanding contributions to the charity cause in Ningbo between January 2010 and December 2011. The qualified individual candidate should be one who has donated at least 2 million yuan to the charity cause and who is well received by the people. Qualified candidates also include those individuals who are very charitable and persistent in donating and volunteering services with moving deeds and great social influence.

In Kongpu Community, 111 poverty-stricken families got aided for the New Year;

residents have got consumer subsidies; people in straitened circumstances are aided with consumer subsidies; the standard of minimum living allowance has been rising; 149,000 aged people have got living subsidies; people in straitened circumstances are secured with various medical services–these are some of the improvements of the living conditions of the people in Ningbo.

Statistics show that in 2011, Ningbo spent 813,230,000 yuan on social relief.

In the year, 149,000 aged people were benefitted by the monthly subsidy of 50-300 yuan. For this program, the city paid about 74 million yuan. Some counties, cities and districts in Ningbo released even more preferential policies in this respect.

In Zhenhai and Yinzhou districts, the monthly subsidy for a centenarian is 500 yuan. In Cixi City, a person aged between 80 and 98 covered by the minimum living allowance has 30% more than the minimum living allowance. 20,317 houses of the aged people have “All-service telephones” installed for free, to ensure they are serviced in emergencies.

In Ningbo 304 rural community service centers were built or rebuilt and the rural community service centers have added up to 1,655, accounting for 70% of administrative villages.

The party committees and governments of various levels are much concerned about the lives of the poverty-stricken people, taking actions to them solve difficulties caused by consumer goods price rises.

By the end of September 201, the city for three times granted consumer subsidies. These subsidies have totaled 23,370,500 yuan, benefitting 172,227 people.

By the end of December 2011, to 43,533 households of minimum living allowance the city had dealt out 207,426,200 yuan as funds of relief, increased by 16% above the same period of the previous year

As type A and type O blood is in short supply in the central blood bank of Ningbo, many medical workers volunteered to donate blood in response to the call from Health Bureau of Ningbo. Till the afternoon on February 3rd, more than 500 medical workers from about 10 medical establishments have donated 160,000ml blood.
More blood is needed as hospitals receive more surgical patients after the Spring Festival, especially type A and type O. To relieve the pressure of blood supply and ensure the sufficient supply of blood for clinical use, Ningbo Blood Organization has started the emergency mobile blood bank donation campaign since January 1st. Till the afternoon on February 3rd, more than 500 medical workers from about 10 hospitals have donated 160,000ml blood.
During the Spring Festival, blood supply in the central blood bank of Ningbo amounts to 60,000ml per day. But the demand increases after the festival, which leads to a lack of blood in the bank., Xu Haidong, Deputy Party Secretary with The Second Hospital, together with other 20 people went to the blood bank February 3rd for blood donation. “Blood is in short supply recently. As medical workers, it is our duty to donate blood to surgical patients voluntarily”, he said

别人借给我一本《十万个为什么》？其中有一篇为什么花盆底下有个洞？其实大家都知道：在花盆里养花，要经常浇水，否则花就会渴死。但是我们常常会把水浇多了，假如化盆底下没有孔，水积在盆里渗不出去，花的根长时间泡在水里，就会腐烂。所以，人们就在花盆底下留了一个孔，一方面使泥土保持适当的湿度，另一方面使根能呼吸空气，这样花就能健康地生长了。书真是我们的好朋友，也是知识的海洋，能解除我的孤单、寂寞，能使我们变得越来越聪明。我眼睛还没好，爸爸不让我多看，一般是他读我听。

Somebody lent me a book called TEN THOUSAND WHY and there is a passage asks why there is a hole under the flower jar? As everybody knows, one should always water the flower in the jar or it will be thirsty to die. If one gives too much water, the root will rust, so the hole can keep the moisture and catch the air to ensure the healthiness of the flower. Book is our best friend and is like an ocean of knowledge. It makes people clever and gets rid of the loneliness. Because of my eye, Daddy didn’t allow me to read too much, instead, he reads to me.

这次化疗打了十四天，今天是最后一天。我眼睛上的疱疹在慢慢开始结痂，肿也在慢慢退，从明天开始，我就不用两根输液管一起吊了，要知道大冬天的，冰冷的液体从手臂上输进去，全身都是冷冰冰的。这几天两只手都是输液管，我躺在床上动也不能动，全身骨头都睡疼了，连吃饭都得爸爸喂，洗脸、上厕所都得爸爸帮忙。下午的时候，我的主治医生又来鼓励我：小佳宁，好好表现，顺利的话下个礼拜就让你回家。哦！我真是太激动了，只要春节之前能回家，我会好好配合你们的！

Today is the last day of the 14-day chemotherapy. The herpes begin to have incrustation and the pus is disappearing. Tomorrow I don’t need to have 2 needles. These days I rested in bed suffering the freezing cold liquid passing through my whole body and the sore bones without any movement. Daddy helped me with everything, eating, washing, and using the bathroom. Doctor visited me this afternoon and encouraged me. Oh yeah, I could possibly go home next week! Behave! Behave! Behave!

最让我担心的是低细胞期发热，今天下午就开始了发热。刚刚疱疹好了很多，我满以为就像医生说的过几天就可以出院，我心里有说不出的兴奋，可现在心里一点底也没有了，就盼白细胞升得快、热度退得快。我一个星期要抽好几次血，只要发热就更糟糕。我抽血都抽怕了，但怕也要抽呀！可恶的病琢磨着我。

What worries me most is the FEVER. I got it this afternoon! I was so excited yesterday for the herpes is getting better and waiting for leaving the hospital soon, but now,,, They did the scary blood-drawing several times per week and it got worse with the fever. I felt so tortured.

病房里在消毒，我现在正坐在门口输血小板，体温也在慢慢地上升。昨晚没怎么睡，药水快要挂到天亮，半个小时量一次体温，最高温度39.6度。今天不像昨晚烧得那么高，也不知道血小板输后怎么样？现在边输边过敏，全身都是红疹，痒起来真难受，医生马上给我开来抗过敏的和退烧的药，一般高烧的话不输血小板，因为输了也是白输。爸爸站在旁边不停地给我抚摸，护士再三交待：白细胞低，千万不能用手抓，破皮了就很容易感染。我痒起来真难受呀！

The sick ward is getting sterilized and I am getting the platelet in front of the sick ward. I didn’t sleep well last night with the saline and the high fever of 39.6. They checked my temperature every half an hour. My fever drops down a little bit today but I have the serious allergy with all the itchy rashes, so they gave me some medicine against it. Nurse told me not to break the rashes or it might get infected so Daddy did some gentle tickle for me. What a terrible feeling!

I didn’t have fever today that means the WBC is increasing and I still have hope to go home for Spring Festival. All the rashes disappeared last evening and so did the fever. Please please please let me go home for Spring Festival without any more accident!

It’s been rained for 2 days and never stopped. My mode is very down during the rainy days so I telephoned some patients in Ningbo hospital. A couple of them could possibly leave the hospital while the others might stay. They bear the same bitterness as me over and over again. I ate a lot in order to grow more WBC and leave the hospital as soon as possible.

我白细胞今天查出来只有几百个，所以又发热了。越是回家心急越是不顺利。今天负责配型的医生打来电话，10个点的供者找到了，叫我爸爸过去交钱办手续给供者体检。我爸爸把我托付给旁边的阿姨就去办事了。真糟糕，要是过年回不去的话，妈妈别说不能买年货，就是吃饭也成问题。平时每次打电话问她吃了没有？有时候是没吃；有时候是和小弟弟一起吃粥。家里没洗衣机，妈妈每次是趁小弟弟睡觉了才能做饭、洗衣服和做别的家务，真希望过年的时候我们一家人能在一起。

I had fever again and there is only several hundred WBC. The more I want to go home the tougher it is. The Marrow-Matching Doctor called and said they’ve found the perfect matching person and told Daddy to pay for the physical checking fee. Daddy agreed and asked the nearby Ayi to take care of me. How terrible if we couldn’t go home that Mummy wouldn’t be able to purchase or eat. Every time we called her, she either didn’t eat or just ate some leftover porridge. There is no washing machine at home so Mummy needs to do all the washings after the sleepiness of my little brother. I do hope we gather together to celebrate the Spring Festival.

今天是我堂姐出嫁的大喜日子，要是在家的话，我爸妈都要去她家帮忙，我们都要去吃酒，可我不能出院。今早上查了个血常规：白细胞还在低，只有四、五百个。天快亮的时候又高烧了，而且眼皮上结痂的疱疹钻心的痒，护士又不让我抓，你说我怎么忍得住呢？昨晚眼皮痒基本没什么合眼，医生说是这个过程，没什么特效药，只能用手轻轻的摸，其实眼皮都被我揉红了也不管用，难受的时候只有偷偷地哭。没得过这种病，你根本体会不到我有多痛苦，我要把这些苦日子熬过去。但愿痛苦过后换来的是幸福，我每天都有这样的期盼。
My cousin sister gets married today and normally my parents would go help and we would join her wedding but I couldn’t leave the hospital. I did the Regular Blood Test today and the WBC didn’t change at all. The fever was back in the early morning and the scab was terribly itchy. How could I bear it without scratching? I couldn’t even close my eyes and there is no miracle medicine for it. Nothing helps except the tears. Nobody would understand this feeling only if he bears it. What I could do is to pray. Pray to exchange the future sweetness with my present bitterness. I pray for this EVERYDAY!
