Ningbo is turning itself into a city powerful in the construction industry. According to Ningbo Housing Construction Committee, in 2011 Ningbo ranks No.1 in Zhejiang in the growth of construction industry. In terms of the output value of the industry, Ningbo is among the top three of the province.

The statistics show that in 2011 the output of the construction industry of Ningbo reaches 192.5 billion yuan, surpassing Jinhua for the first time. For the output, Ningbo is only next to Shaoxing and Hangzhou. In 2011, the total output value of the industry increased by 35.8%, 13.5 points higher than the average growth rate of the industry of Zhejiang and for the growth rate, Ningbo ranks the first in Zhejiang.

Statistics show that in 2011, the added value of the construction industry reached 33.06 billion yuan, breaking through the 30 billion yuan mark for the first time. The added value of the construction industry accounts for 5.50% of the GDP with its contribution rate to the economic growth reaching 5.87%. This indicates that the construction maintains to be a leading contributor to the economy of the city. In 2011 the local tax by the construction industry totals 5.65 billion yuan, increased by 33.3% over the precious year and covering 11.3% of the total of the local tax.

Since the 11th Ningbo Municipal Congress of Party Representatives, Ningbo has firmly carried out the opening up strategy and by both “bringing in” and “going out” it has made the best use of both international and domestic markets.

Statistics from Ningbo Foreign Economy and Trade Bureau shows, in 2011, the total of self-managed import and export reached 98.19 billion US dollars, 132.6% more than in 2006. The overseas investment amounted to 1.1 billion US dollars, 21 times that of 2006. The actual utilized foreign capital amounted to 2.809 billion US dollars, a new high in the history.

Following the opening policy, the city took active measures to introduce good quality capital, famous enterprises and humane resources. By the end of last year, 35 enterprises of the World Top 500 set up 79 enterprises in Ningbo, and the totals 7.97 million US dollars.

In the past five years, the city further promoted the integration of Ningbo Port and Zhoushan Port sped up the construction of the key development zones including Ningbo Meishan Free Trade Zone and made great efforts to develop the economic circle of Hangzhou Bay Bridge, making best use of the advantageous conditions as a city opening to the outside world. In 2011, the total of exports reached 60 billion US dollars, ranking No.8 of the 36 provinces (cities directly under the Central Government), autonomous regions and cities independently listed in the national plan.

In the past 5 years, Ningbo has further integrated itself into the international economy. Statistics of the Ningbo Foreign Economic Cooperation Bureau show that in the last year, the investment Ningbo made in foreign countries is more than one third of the total Zhejiang made in foreign countries, occupying the first place in the 15 quasi-provincial cities in China. By the end of November 2011, Ningbo had opened 1,422 enterprises or agencies in foreign countries, including over 1,000 trade companies and offices.

The 5th session of the 11th Zhejiang Provincial People’s Congress opened on January 12. The province will further promote the construction of the international logistic centers for staple commodities, strengthen the integration of the port resources, improve the management mechanism for the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, and enhance the coastal infrastructural facilities and the sea and railway transport network. It will improve the logistic service system, and accelerate the construction of the transaction platforms for staple commodities and storage and transport bases for the strategic materials for the state.

The report says that this year the province will complete the construction of the Hang-Yong Passenger Railway and promote the prophase work for the dual line of the Yong-Tai-Wen Highway

On the evening of Dec. 22, under the interview of the famous TV anchor Bai Yansong, the award ceremony of “The Pride of Zhejiang-the most influential people in 2011” was held at the Zhejiang TV Station. Ge Mingxia and Gong Xueming from Ningbo won this title.
At the ceremony, Ge Mingxia was the third one to be announce as a figure of the year.
